Position Summary

Our Brewery Engineer will provide technical leadership to the Operations team to solve problems and optimize performance in Packaging, Brewing, Cellaring, and Utilities operations. They will analyze and interpret process and manufacturing data, work with cross functional teams, implement change, utilize lean manufacturing principals, and manage projects.  They will be the technical resource for the equipment and processes in the brewery.  Brewery Engineers are expected to uphold our Ballast Point standards and following our Code of Conduct, Employee Handbook policies and procedures, along with Ballast Point's Mission and Values.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership to solve medium to long range process-based problems in Packaging, Brewing, and Utilities operations.
  • Analyze and interpret process and manufacturing data to identify opportunities for brewery improvement projects, process changes, and new technologies to achieve increased productivity, reduced product loses, enhanced manufacturing flexibility and capacity, improved product quality, safer operations, and improved environmental compliance.
  • Work with cross functional teams to provide technical support for safety and quality improvements or corrective actions.
  • Utilize Root Cause and Corrective Action tools to respond to safety, quality, or operational incidents and near misses.
  • Lead process improvement initiatives to increase operational efficiencies, using Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) as a metric.
  • Lead sustainability efforts to reduce manufacturing operations carbon footprint.
  • Develop ways to improve equipment designs, upgrades, and line efficiencies.
  • Provide technical process control expertise to the team.
  • Establish standards and manage process control.
  • Ensure Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are being executed.
  • Work with the Facilities Maintenance Manager to support the development of electrical and mechanical technicians by coaching, training, and developing/improving SOPs. 
  • Support training initiatives to improve the technical knowledge and skill set of operators and technicians.
  • Lead the implementation of process improvement and/or innovations-based projects.
  • Utilize problem solving tools (5 Why, Data Analysis, Fishbone Diagrams, Process Mapping) to achieve both financial and operational performance targets.

  • Provide project management support for engineering projects

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS in Engineering or related 4-year technical degree or 10+ years of Brewery Engineer experience.
  • Minimum 3 years of engineering experience in a manufacturing environment
  • A safety-first mentality.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and team orientation; technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to collect or extract, evaluate, and utilize data for process improvements.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, comfort level with change, and the ability to lead change.
  • Ability to cross-functionally work across all departments.
  • Manufacturing experience.
  • Knowledge in Lean, Six Sigma, or other operations management system.
  • Possess the ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Solid interpersonal skills and team orientation.
  • Willingness to work rotating shifts, overtime, weekends, and holidays to support the brewery operations and project execution as needed.
  • Experience with AutoCad or other design and drafting software

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in brewing, brewing supplier, food/beverage production, or consumer packaged goods

Physical Requirements/Work Environment

  • Ability to work at least 8 hours
  • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work with long periods of sitting/walking/standing and crouching
  • Will be lifting/moving/pushing raw materials in and out of trucks
  • Will work in an industrial setting with heavy moving machinery, loud noises, textured floors and chemicals
  • Will be exposed to various weather and temperature conditions both indoors and outdoors
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
